Planning Your Breast Augmentation Surgery
As you prepare for breast augmentation surgery, you will have several important decisions to make, including choosing your breast implant size, type and shape. Implant Type: Silicone breast implants have a silicone shell that is filled with a cohesive silicone gel. Saline implants are used much less frequently. Each type of implant has its own set of pros and cons, and the type that is most suitable will depend on your anatomy and goals of surgery.
Implant Size: Breast Implants come in a variety of sizes to help you achieve the exact result you desire. The Vectra 3D imaging system is a very helpful tool as you pick out your implant size, as it enables you to “try on” different sizes to find the most appropriate option. We also use sizers that you can try in a bra to get an idea of what you will look like in clothing.
Implant Shape: Breast Implants are available in round and teardrop shapes. Round implants have equal projection on top and bottom, as opposed to teardrop implants, which are gently sloped (similar to the curve of a natural breast). The decision to use one type over the other is dependent on a number of factors related to your breast tissue and the “look” that you hope to achieve.
Breast Implant Placement: Implants can be placed either above or below the chest muscle. This depends on factors such as the amount of native breast tissue and your body frame.
Incision Location: Implants can be placed through several different incision patterns:
- Around the circumference of the areola
- Within the inframammary fold (where the breast meets the torso)
- Through the armpit
The incisions from breast augmentation do leave scarring, although the scars will be well-concealed within the natural creases or folds of skin. They should not be noticeable underneath a bra or bathing suit top.
What’s Involved with Breast Augmentation Surgery?
Your breast augmentation surgery will be performed in a hospital or accredited day surgery facility. General anaesthesia will be administered so you are completely comfortable during the operation.
Dr. Sjarif will create the surgical incisions in the pre-determined location. Through the incisions, he will create pockets for the implants either above or below the chest muscle. Then, he will position the implants within the pockets.
Recovering from Breast Augmentation Surgery
Your breasts will be swollen and tender as they heal, although most of the discomfort subsides within 24 to 48 hours. The implants may look as though they are sitting very high on the chest until they “settle” into their pockets. You will be wearing a special bra to put slight compression on the breasts as they heal.
You can resume work after a week or two, and your exercise routine after six to eight weeks. Surgical results typically stabilize about six weeks after surgery.
